According to the Finnish Energy Association, in Finland roughly three-quarters of district heat production is based on combined heat and power (CHP) generation, with a significant market share of CHP-derived electricity. This study focuses on the city of Kuopio, noting the recent trends of decreasing fossil fuel use and increasing renewable fuel adoption in electricity production. The reductions in peat-based electricity generation over the past 15 years highlight the importance of selecting appropriate technologies and fuels in terms of cost and emissions. The research underscores the political commitment at both national and municipal levels toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions and the role of new technical innovations, such as flue gas scrubbers and district cooling systems, which have proven effective in minimizing emissions while facilitating energy and cost savings. This indicates that adopting greener technologies not only supports environmental goals but also presents financial advantages for investors in sustainability-enhancing technologies.
