Abstract

Language:

The chapter provides a concise overview of the history and advancements in electric steelmaking over the past century. The primary objective is to highlight the significant technological progress, especially the transition from early electric arc furnaces to more efficient ultrahigh-power furnaces. Methodologically, the text compiles historical data and operational developments of electric furnaces, detailing their increasing role in producing quality steels from recycled ferrous scrap. Results indicate that electric arc furnaces (EAFs), initially limited in capacity and application, have evolved to dominate the market, especially for producing special steels and flat products. The chapter emphasizes that EAFs have become integral in modern steel production, signifying an important shift towards more sustainable practices with the recycling of scrap materials. Overall, the developments in electric steelmaking underscore its relevance in contemporary metallurgy and contribute to understanding future trends in steel production.
