Sago is a native plant of Indonesia, covering approximately 1.128 million hectares or 51.3% of the world’s sago area, predominantly in Papua. This study investigates the potential of sago dregs as an alternative energy source, following previous research conducted by NGOs like WWF in May 2014 on agricultural waste. The objective was to analyze the chemical composition and thermal properties of briquettes produced from sago dregs in a laboratory setting. Two sizes of briquettes, 60 mesh and 80 mesh, were molded into cylindrical shapes, with dimensions recorded for each variation. Results indicated that the 60 mesh briquettes had a calorific value of 4013 kcal/kg and a combustion efficiency of 5.070%, while the 80 mesh briquettes recorded a calorific value of 4007 kcal/kg and a combustion efficiency of 3.58%. The proximate analysis revealed moisture contents of 13.08% for mesh 60 and 13.36% for mesh 80, while volatile matters were 26.18% and 23.52%, respectively. These findings suggest that sago dregs can be feasibly utilized as an alternative fuel source, contributing to sustainable energy solutions in Indonesia.
