Abstract

Language:

This document discusses the challenges posed by combined sewer overflow (CSO) events during wet weather, which can lead to significant water quality impairment in receiving waters due to inadequate treatment of excess flows. The objective is to explore strategies for controlling CSOs, especially through technological advancements like retention treatment basins (RTBs) which can mitigate pollutants. The methodology involves reviewing existing literature and regulatory frameworks, including Ontario's Ministry of the Environment's guidelines, alongside practical applications of RTB systems in urban settings. Results indicate that while traditional RTBs play a vital role in reducing suspended solids and associated pollutants, alternative approaches such as chemically aided RTBs may offer improved performance in restrictive urban landscapes. The study highlights the critical need for optimizing treatment solutions to protect water bodies from the adverse effects of CSOs. Additionally, it emphasizes the importance of regulatory compliance in achieving effective CSO management strategies. Further research is encouraged to refine these systems and assess their long-term impact on water quality management.
