The Activox® process, developed by Norilsk Process Technology, presents a hydrometallurgical solution for the treatment of diverse metal sulphide concentrates. This paper outlines the development and implementation of the Tati Activox® Project (TA®P), which began in 1998 and has progressed from laboratory scale testing in Australia to the successful operation of a demonstration plant in Botswana. The core technology involves ultrafine grinding and oxidation at controlled temperature and pressure conditions to enhance recovery rates for nickel, copper, and cobalt. Methodological approaches included constructing a demonstration plant designed to produce significant quantities of nickel and copper as LME grade cathodes, alongside cobalt in carbonate form. Key findings indicate that the combined milling and leaching operation produces metal sulphates in solution, which are efficiently recovered through a series of separation techniques. This innovative process provides a competitive alternative to traditional pyrometallurgy, highlighting its potential impact on the future of hydrometallurgical refinement. The findings contribute to advancing the understanding of solvent extraction techniques within modern refinery design. Therefore, the TA®P showcases a promising advancement in the field of hydrometallurgical processes and a shift towards more sustainable mining operations.
