The supply of minerals and energy is critical to global society; however, it brings social and environmental impacts that raise concerns regarding generational equity. This introductory editorial discusses a Special Volume aimed at addressing these challenges in the mining industry. The volume consists of 84 articles analyzing various themes, including sustainability accounting, corporate social responsibility, and the future challenges faced by mining. Additionally, it incorporates letters discussing contemporary issues like community conflict and land rehabilitation, accompanied by expert commentaries. The insights gathered propose a research agenda derived from identified gaps and synergies, emphasizing the need for multi-disciplinary collaboration. Overall, this Special Volume seeks to reinvigorate the discourse around sustainability in mining, offering a comprehensive analysis that integrates ecological, ethical, economic, and technological dimensions in order to mitigate the negative impacts and promote a sustainable mining framework.
