In this work, the extraction of copper and iron from a reverberatory furnace slag was studied using a two-step extraction procedure. The first step involved roasting the slag in the presence of sulphuric acid at temperatures ranging from 150 to 800 °C. The second step consisted of leaching the resulting calcine with distilled water. The maximum copper extraction achieved was approximately 94%, which occurred when the slag was roasted at 250 °C with sulphuric acid in excess of about 33% compared to the stoichiometric requirement, followed by water leaching of the calcine at 50 °C. Additionally, around 55% of iron was dissolved under these conditions. For calcine obtained at a sulphation temperature of 600 °C, copper extraction during the water leaching stage remained relatively high at about 79%, while iron extraction was notably low at around 6%. The dissolution of both copper and iron from the calcine was rapid, completing within the first few minutes of the leaching process. Furthermore, the water temperature during the leaching step showed no significant effect on the extraction of copper and iron within the range of 30 to 85 °C.
