Abstract

Language:

This study investigates the effectiveness of somnoplasty, a radiofrequency volumetric tissue reduction of the soft palate, for treating loud, socially disruptive snoring, alongside a comparison with an oral appliance. The objective is to assess both the immediate efficacy and long-term outcomes as reported by spouses. The research involved a sample of twenty patients, who were subdivided into two groups: ten patients underwent somnoplasty, and ten utilized an oral appliance. All participants' snoring was monitored in a laboratory setting to evaluate the minutes spent snoring across varying intensities. For those treated with somnoplasty, the reduction in loud snoring was confirmed through spouse ratings, which indicated improvement criteria. Results showed that seven out of ten somnoplasty patients achieved significant reductions in loud snoring, while the comparison group also demonstrated marked improvements with the oral appliance. Ultimately, the study concluded that while both treatments were effective in reducing loud snoring symptoms, no statistically significant difference was found between the two treatments, suggesting that selection of treatment should depend on factors beyond just efficacy.
