The metals of value in tetrahedrite are copper, antimony, and silver. This study proposes a novel hydrometallurgical process aimed at recovering these metals from tetrahedrite concentrates. The methodology involves leaching the concentrates with ferric fluoborate, followed by solvent extraction, electrowinning, and final residue treatment. Results show that this process yields high-purity SX-EW copper, antimony, and a high-grade silver residue that can undergo further hydrometallurgical treatment for silver recovery. The process demonstrates several advantages, including the ability to achieve rapid leaching rates at modest temperatures while maintaining high metal recovery rates and minimal pyrite attack, resulting in a leach residue primarily composed of elemental sulfur. Characterization of the feed material and sequential extractions of copper and antimony confirm the effectiveness of the process, with high extraction efficiencies reported for both metals in the experimental trials. Ultimately, this method represents a significant advancement in the efficient recovery of valuable metals from tetrahedrite sources.
