Abstract

Language:

This bulletin presents the findings of a study initiated in 1961 by the Bureau of Mines focused on prereduced, hardened iron ore pellets, a versatile product for ironmaking and steelmaking. The objective of the research was to explore the preparation, properties, and potential utilization of these pellets. A structured approach was adopted, starting from laboratory experiments, transitioning to small-scale pilot plant processes, and culminating in evaluations using the Bureau’s experimental blast furnace in Bruceton, Pennsylvania. The methodology encompassed seven parts, which detailed pelletizing technology, laboratory techniques for producing pellets from various iron ore concentrates, as well as the production challenges encountered in a pilot rotary kiln where approximately 140 tons of pellets were created. The results provided crucial data on blast furnace smelting utilizing these prereduced pellets and compared them with other types of burdens. Additionally, the economic implications of producing hot metal from reduced and unreduced iron ore pellets were appraised, offering insights into the state of industrial application for prereduced pellets. These findings serve to document the advancements and offer a permanent record of the notable aspects discovered during this pivotal research.
