Abstract

Language:

The influence of foreign ions addition on the stability and the electrical properties of β and γ alumina type phases has been investigated. Through the use of electron paramagnetic resonance and visible spectroscopy, the localization of paramagnetic impurities in the β alumina structure was performed. Compounds of the α alumina type, which are ternary oxides, display particularly high ionic conductivity due to the diffusion of B+ ions in loosely packed planes within the structure. This study entails a detailed examination of the non-stoichiometry of the β alumina phases, exploring the different patterns related to cationic vacancies and interstitial oxygen atoms. The research reveals that these alumina phases coexist in complete syntaxy, as evidenced by X-ray crystallography and electron microscopy. Furthermore, the presence of interstitial A13+ ions, associated with a Frenkel mechanism, is discussed in relation to the observed electrical properties and structural configurations of the phases. The findings contribute valuable insights into the conductivity mechanisms of superionic conductors based on alumina-type materials.
