After a marked improvement in energy consumption in copper smelting during the past few decades, technology development has been slowing down in the Americas and in Europe. This study aims to highlight the recent advancements in bottom blowing smelting technology being developed in China, which shows potential for further reducing energy consumption while complying with stringent environmental regulations. A comprehensive analysis was conducted on the general configuration of the bath smelting vessel, the design of high-pressure injectors, and the concentrate addition system compared to existing technologies. Results indicated that the bottom blowing technology operates at a temperature range of 1160–1180 °C, the lowest reported for a modern copper smelting process. Additionally, it was suggested that the top feeding of filter cake concentrate positively influences the oxidation potential of the slag while enhancing the FeS solubility in the slag. This study underscores the importance of continuous innovation in the field of copper smelting to meet both economic and environmental goals.
