Abstract

Language:

Accelerated carbonation of BOF slag in a rotating packed bed (RPB) is a viable method for CO2 capture due to its high mass transfer rate; however, the process chemistry of carbonation of BOF slag is not well-determined due to their complex compositions. In this study, quantitative X-ray diffraction was employed to elucidate the mechanism of the carbonation reaction in an RPB. The Rietveld refinement technique, aimed at minimizing the difference between experimental and refined XRD patterns through a least-square procedure, was used to quantify the crystallized mineral phases. Furthermore, the changes in the physico-chemical properties of BOF slags before and after carbonation were thoroughly evaluated. The findings reveal significant insights into the effectiveness of the carbonation process and contribute to the understanding of CO2 sequestration methodologies, emphasizing the potential utilization of carbonated steelmaking slag as safe and sustainable materials for construction applications.
