The Heat Melt Compactor (HMC) is a waste management technology developed at NASA Ames Research Center for processing waste aboard spacecraft. This study aimed to assess the water extraction capabilities of the HMC through experiments conducted at ARC. Nineteen experiments were designed to quantify and evaluate the limitations of the HMC’s water recovery from various waste samples. Initial findings indicated an ability to recover 90 to 98% of the water present in the waste. Specifically, the waste samples contained 19.04% to 20.45% water by weight. Amounts of water recovered varied substantially, ranging from 1.2% to 98.4%. Analysis of six tiles post-processing revealed water retention between 6.97% and 37.67%, with water activity values averaging 0.472 which are critical for inhibiting microbial growth. A significant correlation was found betweenPercent Water Recovery, Percent Expected Water Encapsulated, and Water Activity, suggesting that Percent Water Recovery could serve as a predictive measure for these other critical parameters. Ultimately, the results demonstrate that while significant water recovery potential exists, complete water extraction remains an unachieved goal.
