The roasting and gas handling circuits at Goldstrike's new Roasting Facility incorporate proven technologies in a unique combination. The objective was to recommend the most robust and economical process for Goldstrike's carbonaceous resources and optimize roast conditions based on prior extensive testing. A series of pilot plant campaigns were conducted using Freeport-McMoRan's whole ore roasting technology with pure oxygen to ensure effective processing of Carlin-type carbonaceous ores. The project also emphasized rigorous gas cleaning measures following the roasting process, including multiple scrubbing and incineration steps to mitigate environmental impacts. A preliminary economic evaluation comparing roasting to alternative processes demonstrated favorable outcomes, prompting senior management to approve further studies. The project was successfully commissioned on schedule and within budget, achieving production forecasts shortly after start-up due to the strategic selection of proven unit operations and active collaboration between project teams and operational staff. These factors contributed significantly to the project’s success and the efficient production of gold from the facility.
