This presentation discusses the critical role of reactive power as an ancillary service in the context of electrical engineering. The objective is to propose a structured market for reactive power that allows generators to effectively bid based on their reactive capability and associated costs. The methodology involves a two-step procedure designed for Independent System Operators (ISOs) to develop optimal contracts for reactive power provisions. This process incorporates the formulation and maximization of a social welfare function aimed at ensuring efficient market operations. The results highlight the complexity of determining the right payment structures and qualification criteria for reactive power suppliers. By examining various components of cost—such as opportunity costs and operating costs—this work seeks to clarify the standards required for effective reactive power support in a competitive market environment. The findings emphasize the necessity for improved optimization models to enhance the pricing mechanisms and overall framework of the reactive power market, addressing uncertainties and ensuring stability in power supply. The insights presented aim to contribute significantly to the ongoing discussions regarding the evolution of energy markets with integrated reactive power solutions.
