Arsenic (As) is a toxicant in tailings from sulphur deposits, posing an environmental risk due to its high solubility. This study aims to assess the stability of As when mixed with cemented paste backfill (CPB) produced from Casa Berardi mine tailings. The methodology involved synthesizing three different CPBs in the laboratory using these tailings and varying binders, followed by leaching tests after a curing period of 28 days. The results revealed that As was released at a higher concentration from the fly ash-based CPB compared to those based on slag and Portland cement. Interestingly, stabilization of As improved at lower pH levels across all CPB samples. This behavior can be attributed to variations in the solubility of As-compounds influenced by the binder type and pH levels. The release mechanisms identified in the study include diffusion and dissolution/precipitation, with an observed accelerated leaching process likely influenced by the oxidation of As-bearing substances. These findings highlight the importance of binder selection and environmental conditions in managing the stability of arsenic in CPB applications.
