The application of green materials in processes such as wastewater treatment to restore and regenerate the ecosystem is essential as a way of restoring the functional value of products. Geopolymers are generally considered green materials as their synthesis is based on using waste source materials which translates to waste valorisation. Their application has always been focused on their use as construction materials but recently they are considered in the treatment of water due to their porous nature and durability. The surface treatment of geopolymers through hydroxylation can increase their adsorption capacity as the hydrophobic non-porous materials are converted into hydrophilic mesoporous materials containing many exchangeable sites. Wastewater treatment offers a potential solution for its reuse to meet the ever-increasing global demands in the urban, industrial, agricultural and environmental sectors, where the availability of clean water is scarce. At the same time, treatment of water can serve as a source for potential recovery of resources such as nutrients and some metals. This review gives an overview on the synthesis of geopolymers with a focus on production methods, surface modification, the comparison of acid and alkali geopolymers and their application in wastewater treatment. The review is essential as it will identify some gaps that may open further research in this area thus contributing to the effective production and use of geopolymers in the drive towards a circular economy.
