This paper provides a framework for identifying the scope and approach of different mining optimisation products and services, aiming to enable mining businesses to clarify their goals when seeking to optimise their operations. The term ‘optimisation’ has gained popularity among mining companies as a means to enhance business performance and shareholder value, yet its widespread adoption has led to ambiguity in its application by various service providers. Through discussions with industry stakeholders, this study reveals the diverse interpretations of optimisation prevalent in the sector. The authors discuss distinct types of business optimisation, emphasizing the shortcomings of the mining industry's conventional strategy selection method in favor of a more robust strategy optimisation process to ascertain the optimal plan for business operations. The findings suggest that understanding the differences between operational and overall business optimisation is crucial for companies seeking to effectively leverage these tools and achieve meaningful enhancements in performance.
