The McCabe-Thiele graphical method is widely recognized as a fundamental technique for determining the number of theoretical stages in a distillation column. However, this study identifies significant weaknesses in the application of this method, particularly when dealing with subcooled liquid or superheated vapor feeds, as well as challenges associated with the optimal placement of feed stages. This paper presents a revised distillation theory that eliminates these shortcomings and demonstrates its applicability to both graphical binary distillation and analytical methods, such as the Ponchon-Savarit method and shortcut approximate techniques for binary and multi-component distillation processes. Furthermore, the applicability of the revised theory extends beyond distillation to other separation processes, including absorption, stripping, leaching, and extraction, indicating its potential for wide-ranging applications in chemical engineering and industrial practices.
