This review discusses the major waste streams generated in electroplating industries, specifically wastewater, spent solvents, spent process solutions, and sludge, which occur in large volumes daily. The objective of this study is to explore methods of waste minimization through process modification and operational improvements. The methodology includes a comprehensive examination of existing practices in some electroplating industries, where various waste minimization strategies have been successfully implemented. These strategies focus on source reduction approaches, reducing drag-out waste, and making necessary modifications to processes for enhanced environmental benefits. The findings indicate that substantial reduction in waste can be achieved through these methods, as evidenced by the extensive knowledge base covering multiple disciplines that was reviewed. Overall, this paper underscores the importance of improving operational efficiencies and adopting innovative practices towards achieving effective waste management in electroplating sectors for sustainability and environmental protection.
