Zinc production primarily relies on sulfide ores, yet the depletion of these resources has heightened the need to exploit non-sulfide sources. This study investigates the leaching kinetics of smithsonite, a significant non-sulfide zinc resource, in hydrochloric acid solutions, addressing a gap in the existent literature on the leaching behaviors of such ores. Experimental methods focused on analyzing the kinetics during leaching under various conditions, applying the shrinking core model to relate reaction time to zinc leaching fractions. The results indicated distinctive leaching dynamics characterized by the presence of impurities, which affect the acid consumption and overall leaching rates. The activation energy was also calculated to understand the energy barriers in the leaching process. This work contributes vital insights into efficient extraction techniques for smithsonite, providing a pathway for utilizing alternative zinc resources in response to the growing demand. Overall, the findings suggest an urgent need to optimize leaching strategies for smithsonite, enabling more sustainable practices in zinc production.
