Abstract

Language:

Over 85% of Cameroonians utilize building informal sector mechanisms characterized by a disorganized workforce and a myriad of materials sourced from unclear supply networks, supported by diverse funding sources. Prior studies have provided insights into these mechanisms; however, their complexity is heightened by the imperatives of sustainable development and associated sanitary measures. Sustainability provides a framework to address social, economic, and environmental challenges, yet its application in construction is often fraught with difficulties due to the intricate nature of informal methods. This paper emphasizes the necessity of leveraging Building Information Modeling, particularly the benefits offered by artificial intelligence (AI), to attain appropriate, swift, and diversified assistance in this context. We propose a conceptual framework for an intelligent building approach that aims to bridge the gap between informal sector practices and sustainable development mandates. The findings highlight the potential of AI as a transformative support tool in navigating the complexities of the construction informal sector in Cameroon.
