The mining sector plays a pivotal role in the economy of several countries, contributing to both revenue generation and the enhancement of living standards. In Zimbabwe and the broader SADC region, mining significantly impacts economic growth, with resources like vanadium, platinum, chromite, and diamonds showcasing the potential for development. However, it also presents numerous environmental challenges that require effective management strategies. The objective of this study is to investigate the environmental management challenges specific to the mining sector in Zimbabwe. Utilizing a comprehensive analysis of existing literature and legal frameworks, the research identifies key issues that hinder effective environmental governance in mining operations. Results indicate that inadequate regulatory measures, coupled with socio-economic pressures, exacerbate environmental degradation. Furthermore, the findings reveal a need for improved collaboration between stakeholders, including government, mining companies, and local communities. The study highlights the urgency of implementing sustainable practices and developing a robust policy framework to address these challenges effectively. In conclusion, this research provides critical insights into the intersection of environmental management and mining, offering pathways for future developments in the sector.
