Acid and Metalliferous Drainage (AMD) is recognised as a serious environmental problem in the mining industry, posing threats to water quality, vegetation cover and social licenses of mining operations. This study aimed to determine the AMD potential of fifty (50) waste rock samples from a mine utilizing Acid Base Accounting (ABA) techniques. Mineralogical studies revealed major sulphide minerals such as pyrite, arsenopyrite, and chalcopyrite. Paste pH tests indicated that 20% of the samples had undergone weathering, signaling the onset of AMD generation. Conductivity levels showed that approximately 22% of the samples fell between 1000 to 10,000 µS/cm, indicative of high salinity typical of AMD. ABA results determined that 32% of the samples were acid generating, while 16% were non-acid forming and 52% remained uncertain. The findings highlighted a significant potential for AMD generation from the waste rock material, which could adversely affect the local environment, particularly water quality, if appropriate preventive measures are not implemented.
