Abstract

Language:

The present study is an attempt to analyse the role and performance of self-help groups (SHGs) in promoting women's empowerment in Kancheepuram District of Tamilnadu. The broad objective of the study is to analyse the operating system of SHGs for the mobilisation of savings, delivery of credit to the needy, management of group funds, repayment of loans, and building up leadership while establishing linkages with banks, and to examine the social benefits derived by the members. Primary data was collected using field observation and structured questionnaire survey methods, supplemented by discussions and interviews with local NGOs and government grassroots level workers. The study covers 50 SHGs with 800 members, selected from 281 SHGs operating in the district, specifically under the monitoring of Magalir Thittam. Results indicate that SHGs have established a new agenda for financial intermediation by banks through micro-credit, which is demanded for various purposes. The formation of SHGs has led to increased savings habits, economic independence, self-confidence, social cohesion, asset ownership, freedom from debt, and additional employment for members. Thus, SHGs have effectively served the cause of women empowerment, social solidarity, and the socio-economic betterment of the poor.
