Abstract

Language:

The Ba'l/Al-Arid archaeological Mission (MBA) started multidisciplinary investigations in the inland region of north-western Oman in 2019 following a preliminary survey carried out by a Japanese team under the direction of Professor Yasushi Kondo. This paper presents the main results of the third and fourth archaeological field seasons carried out in 2022 and 2023. During these two seasons, excavations in the Al-Arid settlement site focused on a tower (Tower 3) in use during the Late Islamic and Umayyad periods, two tombs built in the Hafti period, and an open-trench irrigation canal. This last, which could be followed over a length of 151 m, probably dates back to the Early Bronze Age according to three consistent radiocarbon dates from charcoal samples collected in different sealed contexts. In addition, a workshop dedicated to the transformation of copper ore into metal, which was clearly active during the early Hafti period, was discovered. This is an exciting finding that attests to the emergence of copper metallurgy in the region. These results make it possible to widen the debate about the settlement and the nature of sites in the southern foothills of the Hajar Mountains at the end of the 4th and beginning of the 3rd millennium.
