Abstract

Language:

This article reviews the physical metallurgy aspects of silicon solar cells, focusing on the principles of thermochemical extractive metallurgy, phase equilibria, solidification, and kinetics that underpin their production. The objective is to examine the impact of these processes on solar cell performance and cost. The methodology involves a critical discussion of materials-processing aspects relevant to semiconductor silicon solar cells, emphasizing the importance of controlling impurities and defects, which can significantly affect efficiency and yield. Results indicate that while the technology for manufacturing silicon solar cells is relatively straightforward, achieving low production costs and high performance remains a challenge. Projections suggest that to meet future energy demands, the cost of solar cells must be reduced by 50% to 60%. This sets a formidable task for materials scientists as they strive to optimize the efficiency of solar cells while addressing economic constraints. Overall, the paper highlights the intersection of semiconductor engineering and physical metallurgy in enhancing the viability of solar energy as a sustainable power source.
