THE HOLOCAUST AND THE ALBANIAN SALVATION

This paper explores the role of Albania during the Holocaust, focusing on how Albanians rescued at least 3,280 Jews from persecution between 1933 and 1944. The objective is to highlight the historical significance of Albanian actions in providing sanctuary to Jews fleeing Nazi oppression, as recognized by institutions like Yad Vashem, which posthumously honored 69 Albanians as 'Righteous Among the Nations.' The methodology involves historical analysis of testimonies, records, and scholarly research to document the efforts of these individuals and communities. The results illustrate a profound narrative of humanitarianism that contrasts sharply with the widespread complicity in the Holocaust seen in other parts of Europe. The research underscores the importance of remembering these acts of valor and kindness, contributing to a more nuanced understanding of the Holocaust and the diverse responses to its atrocities.
