Abstract

Language:

This paper aims to discuss the importance of improving the power factor for enhancing the power system quality. The low power factor in the power system directly increases transmission power losses and decreases the useful life of high voltage equipment. Power factor, defined as the ratio between real power (kW) and apparent power (kVA), is measured by Cos (the angle between voltage and current). A higher angle between voltage and current results in lower power factor and increased losses in heating and magnetizing equipment such as transformers and motors. Common motor loads can be found in air conditioning systems, factory drives, and washing machines. Power factor correction, achievable through the addition of capacitors in parallel with loads, can enhance the efficiency of electrical power conversion into useful work output. This paper details the benefits of improving power factor, alongside a proposed algorithm validated with simple motor simulations to determine the required capacitor value for enhancing the power factor from 0.85 to 0.97, ultimately reducing transmission losses and the capacity requirements of electrical equipment, thereby lowering design costs.
