Abstract

Language:

The Hall-Héroult process is an electrolysis method designed for large-scale aluminum production, contingent upon the dissolution of alumina in a bath solution. The hazardous operational conditions of the process complicate the development of continuous measurement sensors, while local variations in alumina concentration occur throughout the pot cell during daily operations. This study aims to establish a modeling framework that provides a spatio-temporal dynamic representation of the alumina concentration distribution. A comprehensive analysis of convection-diffusion relations is performed, expanding the alumina source term to derive correlations between the available measurements and the resulting outputs. By implementing this model, the research demonstrates significant potential for enhanced monitoring and control of the alumina concentration in the Hall-Héroult electrolysis process, ultimately facilitating improved operational safety and efficiency. The findings suggest that a deeper understanding of the spatial and temporal dynamics within the cell can lead to more effective management strategies in aluminum production processes.
