In view of the environmental problem involved in the management of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) and the recycling of post-consumer plastic, there is a pressing need for rapid measurement technologies for the simple identification of various commercial plastic materials and contaminants to improve recycling. This research focuses on the characterization and recycling of two types of plastics obtained from personal computers (grey plastic) and televisions (black plastic). Various analytical techniques, including Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), were employed to monitor the compositions of WEEE. The study successfully identified the chemical structure of each plastic material, detecting polymeric contaminants, specifically brominated flame retardants (BFRs), in grey plastics using differing techniques. The methodologies developed provide a rapid, accurate, and economical means of identifying large volumes of WEEE plastics, highlighting their significance for effective recycling practices.
