This review provides a comprehensive analysis of copper metallurgical slags, focusing on their current knowledge and environmental fate. The objective is to assess the existing literature regarding the behavior, weathering processes, and environmental impact of copper slags. Utilizing a systematic approach, the review synthesizes findings from various studies, addressing the primary phases of slags, their susceptibility to alteration, and secondary phases concerning metal sequestration and solubility. Furthermore, factors influencing the weathering of slags are examined, including the leaching processes, extractant influence, agitation, temperature, liquid-to-solid ratio, and particle size. Results indicate that copper slags pose significant environmental risks, particularly through metal leaching which can be influenced by multiple interacting factors. The findings underline the necessity for continued research in this area to develop effective management strategies for slag disposal and to mitigate their environmental impact. This review aims to provide a reference for both researchers and practitioners in the field of environmental science and waste management.
