This study addresses the historical context of urban wastewater management in the Paris region, particularly focusing on the irrigation of non-fertile soils and the implications of this practice on soil quality and metal pollutant migration. The objective is to assess the impact of long-term wastewater irrigation on soil metal concentrations, especially zinc, cadmium, and lead, and their potential transfer to groundwater and the Seine River. A mixed-method approach is adopted, combining historical data analysis with empirical soil testing in wastewater-irrigated regions. Results indicate significant variability in metal concentrations within the surface plough horizon, influenced by agricultural practices and irrigation configurations. The study highlights the legacy of historical irrigation practices, leading to heightened metal accumulation and posing risks for groundwater and riverine ecosystems. A drastic reduction in irrigation water and organic inputs is noted, altering soil redox conditions and microbiological activity, which may exacerbate the transfer of metals. Understanding these interactions is vital for managing future urban wastewater systems and mitigating environmental impacts. This research contributes knowledge of historical practices that shape modern soil and water management challenges.
