This study investigates the impacts of legal reforms on sustainable development in former mining communities, particularly focusing on the Kabwe Lead-Zinc Mine in Zambia. The objective was to analyze how legal frameworks can facilitate sustainable development practices in communities affected by mining activities. Employing a qualitative research methodology, data was collected through interviews and literature reviews, which provided insights into community perceptions and the effectiveness of current legal reforms. Findings reveal that while several initiatives have been established to aid community development post-mining, many remain ineffective due to a lack of enforcement and community engagement. The study also highlights that successful sustainable development requires a holistic approach that involves the community in legal reform processes, ensuring that their needs and concerns are prioritized. Recommendations include strengthening legal mechanisms to support sustainable practices, enhancing community involvement in policy formulation, and fostering collaboration among stakeholders. Overall, the study underscores the critical role of legal reforms in achieving sustainability in former mining regions.
