Abstract

Language:

Nickel production is vital for steelmaking, with Turkey harboring significant reserves. This paper aims to investigate the calcination characteristics of Sivrihisar laterite ores from Central Anatolia, which are important for ferronickel production. A laboratory-scale project initiated in 2010 focuses on the calcination, prereduction, and smelting stages of production. The methodology involved conducting calcination experiments to discern the behavior of Sivrihisar laterites under varying conditions. Results indicated that the calcination process effectively eliminates chemically bound water and helps in the preparation of laterite ores for subsequent ferronickel processing. The findings are expected to provide crucial insights for the operational ferronickel plant planned for the Yunusemre region, aiming for efficient nickel extraction. This research contributes to the understanding of nickel recovery from local resources in Turkey, highlighting both the industrial potential and the specific characteristics of Sivrihisar laterites. The application of the rotary kiln–electric arc furnace process in the subsequent stages underscores the relevance of these findings for industrial metallurgy and resource management.
