This document provides a comprehensive introduction to the field of Physical Metallurgy, specifically designed for B.Tech students in the 3rd semester. The objective is to familiarize students with essential concepts such as crystal structures, solidification processes, equilibrium phase diagrams, transformation diagrams, diffusion, and the characteristics of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Methodologically, the course integrates theoretical frameworks with practical applications to elucidate key principles. The systematic overview covers a range of topics, including cold work, recovery, and recrystallization, emphasizing their relevance in exploiting structural alloys within engineering contexts. Upon completion, students will demonstrate not only a systematic understanding of crystal structures and phase diagrams but also possess the ability to critically evaluate their significance in relation to real alloys and their microstructures. Additionally, the course aims to instill a robust awareness of key concepts such as diffusion and transformation types while exploring their implications for designing and processing metallic materials. Results indicate that successful participants will be well-equipped to address contemporary challenges in material science, particularly concerning the interplay between microstructure, processing, and engineering properties.
