This review explores the potential of utilizing mining waste as a sustainable resource for the production of mullite-based ceramics, which are valued for their excellent physical properties and diverse applications in technological fields such as metallurgy and high-temperature composites. The objective is to assess the feasibility of using mining byproducts, specifically silica and alumina, as alternative raw materials in mullite manufacturing, thereby reducing costs and environmental impact. Various synthesis methods traditionally employed for mullite production, including sintering and sol-gel techniques, are discussed in relation to integrating mining waste into the process. The findings reveal that leveraging mining waste not only lowers production expenses but also mitigates the depletion of natural resources, making this approach environmentally beneficial. The study reviews existing scientific literature that investigates the incorporation of mining waste in developing clay-based ceramic materials, emphasizing the presence of mullite as the primary crystalline phase. Overall, the insights provided in this review underscore the importance and practicality of transforming mining waste into a valuable resource for ceramic production, aligning with broader goals of sustainability and resource management.
