In industrial processes, understanding the detailed mechanisms is crucial for effective redesign and optimization of processes and equipment performance. Many metallurgical processes pose challenges for visual observation and measurement of process variables, rendering traditional methods cost-prohibitive. Consequently, physical modeling is often employed to gain insights into these processes and validate computer numerical models. This paper summarizes the research conducted at The University of Auckland, focusing on physical modeling related to the Hall-Héroult electrolytic cell, in-line melt treatment processes, and steel casting tundish operations. The investigation highlights the importance of physical modeling in providing necessary information for validating numerical models and examines the application of similitude principles to enhance the understanding of gas-induced flows in metallurgical settings. The findings of this research contribute to improving process efficiency and efficacy in various metallurgical operations.
