This paper explores the concept of the Albanian Besa as a fundamental aspect of Albanian national identity, which transcends religious affiliations. The objective is to challenge the traditional perceptions of religious distribution among Albanians and to argue for the harmonious coexistence of believers and non-believers, asserting that Albanian nationhood is a unifying force above personal religious affiliations. The methodology involves a critical analysis of historical and contemporary census data, alongside a review of relevant literature on Albanian history and culture. The results indicate that the overwhelming majority of Albanians hold secular views, and that the historical narrative of Islam in Albania is rooted in the complex socio-political dynamics of Ottoman rule. Furthermore, the concept of Besa is positioned as a core value that encapsulates the spirit of hospitality and moral obligation, which cannot be exclusively tied to any religious identity. The implication of the findings encourages a reevaluation of the Albanian heritage in the context of its rich diversity and reinforces the notion that the Besa is an intrinsic part of Albanian identity that reflects collective rather than sectarian experiences.
