Pollution of underground water by nitrate is a serious problem that has been widely observed worldwide. This type of pollution can be dangerous for human health and especially for children. Therefore, nitrate must be removed from contaminated groundwater. The objective of this study is to evaluate nitrate removal by the electrochemical method. A total of 200 mL of water samples contaminated with nitrate was prepared by adding an appropriate amount of NaNO3 to distilled water. The samples were treated using a batch electrochemical reactor on a laboratory scale. Graphical rods were applied as electrodes, and nitrate concentration was determined by a spectrophotometric method. The results indicated that the application of the electrochemical method led to the removal of 15.33%, 17.41%, 19.48%, and 21.58% of nitrate ions within hydraulic retention times of 30, 60, 90, and 120 minutes, respectively. These results were achieved using a voltage of 24 volts and an electrode surface area of 15.896 cm³. The findings demonstrate the efficacy of the electrochemical technique in addressing nitrate pollution in wastewater.
