This study investigates the prevalence of treated behavioral disorders among adult users of public shelters in Philadelphia, based on a comprehensive analysis of 27,638 homeless adults admitted from 1990 to 1992. The objective was to assess the rates of mental health and substance use disorders, both treated and untreated, within this population over a nine-year period. Methodologically, diagnostic interviews were conducted with randomly selected samples during single encounters, focusing on their history of behavioral disorders and service utilization. Results indicated that 20.1% of the shelter users had received treatment for a mental health disorder, while 25.3% had treatment for substance use disorders. Furthermore, 20.7% were identified with untreated substance use issues. Overall, 65.5% of adult shelter users were recognized as having experienced a mental health or substance use problem at some point. This longitudinal study underscores the significance of addressing behavioral health needs within the homeless population, highlighting the critical intersection of homelessness with mental health and substance use issues.
