This document discusses the compatibility of PNP and NPN sensors with API input types, focusing on three-wire and two-wire detector configurations as per IEC 1131-2 standards. The objective is to clarify how these sensors operate with positive (sink) and negative (source) logic inputs at a 24VDC power supply. A comparative analysis of three-wire PNP and NPN sensors reveals that both are compatible with respective positive and negative logic inputs. Moreover, two-wire sensor functionalities are explored, highlighting compatibility nuances similar to their three-wire counterparts. The results indicate that while three-wire sensors can efficiently interface with both logic types, two-wire sensors need careful consideration for negative logic setups due to safety concerns related to potential grounding issues. The paper concludes with recommendations cautioning against the use of negative logic for safety reasons and offering guidance on proper wiring practices to prevent accidental triggering under fault conditions. Therefore, it emphasizes the importance of understanding sensor logic types in automated systems to ensure correct implementation and hazard mitigation.
