This paper discusses the dynamics of corrosion and its control, focusing on the influence of various factors on the corrosion rates of metals, particularly iron and steel. The objective is to elucidate how differential aeration cells and anodic protection can affect corrosion outcomes, especially in different environments such as natural waters and atmospheric exposures. The methodology employs a comprehensive analysis of corrosion phenomena across different types of metals and environments, revealing key interactions between oxygen diffusion and various manufacturing processes. Results demonstrate that corrosion rates are significantly impacted by factors like oxygen availability and the specific characteristics of protective coatings. Notably, the findings indicate that atmospheric corrosion tends to yield lower average rates compared to that experienced in aqueous settings, particularly for passive metals like aluminum and stainless steels. Additional insights into the anodic polarization behavior reveal that while corrosion rates may remain non-zero under anodic protection, they are generally lower than those under cathodic protection. The paper provides crucial insights for improving corrosion resistance in engineering applications through informed material selection and protective strategies.
