The research area "Virtual Manufacturing" can be defined as an integrated manufacturing environment which enhances decision and control levels in manufacturing processes. This paper aims to present an updated vision of Virtual Manufacturing, addressing its influence on product and process design, as well as production planning, machine tools, robotics, and manufacturing systems. As automation technologies like CAD/CAM have considerably shortened product design timelines, Virtual Manufacturing promises similar efficiencies during the manufacturing phase through effective modeling, simulation, and optimization of both products and their fabrication processes. In today's competitive landscape, where product complexities and market demands necessitate agile production capabilities, virtual environments enable industrialists to simulate manufacturing processes comprehensively. This facilitates the early optimization of critical factors including cost, quality, and time, while ensuring that producibility and affordability are factored in from the outset. The integration of virtual manufacturing systems is thus crucial for the advancement of manufacturing industries in a rapidly evolving and globally distributed operational context.
