Abstract

Language:

This chapter reviews the current status of copper leaching and recovery operations in the United States, highlighting the significance of these techniques within the copper industry. The objective is to analyze the contributions of leach operations to total mine output and provide a comprehensive understanding of the evolution of these processes. Methodologically, the text employs a historical perspective, encompassing the development of open-pit mining techniques and the accidental discovery of leaching from low-grade sulfuric overburden. Additionally, the chapter discusses the advancements in technology allowing for more efficient recovery methods and the adaptation of leaching technology to process various copper-bearing materials. Results demonstrate that leaching, particularly dump and above-ground ore leaching, represents a significant hydrometallurgical segment of domestic copper production, while also exploring other methods such as in situ leaching. The findings indicate that leaching continues to evolve, addressing both economic and technological challenges in maximizing copper recovery from diverse sources.
