Abstract

Language:

This article discusses the use of bio-leaching as a pre-treatment step before cyanidation to improve gold recovery from refractory ores containing pyrite and arsenopyrite. Given the significant challenges posed by the encapsulation of precious metals in sulfide matrices, the objective is to explore alternative techniques for their extraction. The methodology includes a review of two bacterial leaching methods: stirred reactor bio-leaching and bio-heap leaching processes, with details provided on industrial applications and the economic feasibility of these techniques. Results indicate that bio-leaching serves as an effective and inexpensive pre-treatment method that enhances the exposure of encapsulated metals to leaching solutions; however, it is characterized by a slower process compared to traditional methods. The findings suggest that bacterial leaching can tackle the inefficiencies of conventional pre-oxidation methods, such as oxidative roasting, which may lead to poor metal recovery due to significant material losses. The discussion includes both the operational costs associated with bio-leaching and its potential as a sustainable solution for processing sulfide ores before cyanidation.
