Abstract

Language:

The production of castings using green sand moulds is a crucial method in various industrial sectors, where the quality of castings highly depends on the mould's characteristics. This paper investigates a new approach for measuring the flowability of clay-bonded moulding sand, which is essential for ensuring mould stability. Conventional methods for assessing flowability have become inadequate, prompting the development of a specifically designed density sensor by a research team led by Professor Jürgen L. Bast at the Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg. The methodology involved rigorous testing of the sensor's accuracy against different sand parameters, including water and clay content, grain composition, mixing time, and compaction pressure. Results demonstrated that the new sensor not only provides precise real-time flowability measurements in a laboratory setting but is also applicable during the actual moulding process in foundries. This innovative capability offers significant benefits by enabling immediate assessment of mould sand quality based on real-time data, thus enhancing casting quality and production efficiency.
