Crop destruction from uncontrolled cattle grazing is a major problem in Nigeria, often escalating into violent conflict between farmers and Fulani herdsmen. This study presents the design and development of a stealth ultrasonic cattle repellent device to nonviolently deter cattle from entering cultivated farmlands. The device, named Stealth Transmitting Repellent Oscillator for Livestock Zones (STROZ), emits high-frequency acoustic signals in the 20–35 kHz range, which are audible to cattle but largely inaudible to humans and perceived as a loud screeching sound by the animals. It exploits bovine neophobic behaviour, whereby cattle avoid unfamiliar or unpleasant stimuli. The system comprises a microcontroller-based ultrasonic signal generator, a power amplification stage, and directional ultrasonic transducers. Field experiments conducted under controlled conditions showed an average deterrence effectiveness of 85% within a 15 m radius. The proposed system offers a nonviolent, technology-driven approach to protect crops and reduce farmer–herder conflicts in Nigeria.
