Cobalt has evolved from an ancient material used primarily to make blue glass in Mesopotamia into a critical component across various modern industries including aerospace, automotive, and technology. In the United States, the demand for cobalt and its derivatives is high, but domestic supply is limited due to low-grade ore deposits and historically insufficient mining output. This situation necessitates reliance on international sources, exposing the supply chain to various risks exemplified by the 1978 Cobalt Crisis, which highlighted vulnerabilities associated with geopolitical instability in leading producer nations like the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Following this crisis, cobalt prices surged due to acute supply shortages, prompting manufacturers to seek alternatives or increase recycling practices. Presently, the DRC remains the predominant supplier of cobalt, but its market shares are impacted by governance challenges. This article analyzes current and historical global cobalt production trends, aiming to elucidate the complex dynamics and risks associated with cobalt trade, and to provide insights for industry stakeholders concerned about supply security.
